William Ruto's Lead Counsels Plead for More Time to Muster Enough Defence

William Ruto’s Lead Counsels Plead for More Time to Muster Enough Defence

Lawyers representing president-elect William Ruto have asked for more time to mount a substantial defence against opponents.

During the pre-trial hearing on Tuesday, August 30, Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia lamented over the time allocation.

Ngatia asked Chief Justice Martha Koome to look into the time the court had allocated them, citing unfairness. "Eight petitioners have two lawyers each, which makes 16. We’re living in difficult times. To master defence against 16 lawyers when all we have is four lawyers is not easy. Your fairness is legendary, CJ," said Ngatia.

He asked if Koome would allocate half of his opponent’s time to enable him to muster a strong defence. "Total time given is 8 hours, I’ve been allowed three hours. At least allow me half my opponent’s time so that I can muster a substantial defence," he told the court.

Meanwhile opposition leader Raila Odinga says he still believes he won election, but will respect court ruling.
