"Meet me at midnight," Taylor Swift announced to her 90 million Twitter followers on Sunday night.

The invitation was sent out shortly after Swift took the stage to accept the Video of the Year award for the 10-minute version of her 2012 breakup song All Too Well at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The award winner surprised viewers when she revealed that she will release her next album on 21 October.

"I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand new album comes out October 21st, and I will tell you more at midnight," Swift said onstage.

In the social media announcement, Swift revealed the album is called Midnights and that it will tell the stories of "13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life".

In an additional statement, Swift elaborated on the album:

"We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t – right this minute – about to make some fateful life-altering mistake. This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching – hoping that just maybe when the clock strikes twelve … we’ll meet ourselves."

This is the Exile hitmaker’s first album that will consist entirely of fresh material since Folklore and Evermore both came out as surprise releases five months apart in 2020.
