Mobile phone giant Samsung produced its first phone manufactured in Egypt, a move that will help reduce the prices of this type of phone in Egypt, the Vice President of the Mobile Phone and Satellite Division in Egypt Walid Ramadan announced.

Ramadan told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Samsung opened a mobile phone factory in Beni Suef, becoming the fourth company after Seiko, Vivo, and Nokia to open factories in Egypt.

This represents a major shift in the mobile phone industry and a step that will save millions of dollars used in the import of these commodities, he said.

Ramadan added that this will also prompt more international companies to open their factories in the Egyptian market, in which about 18 million phones are purchased annually.

Internet lines sold in Egypt annually reach more than 60 million, mobile phone SIMs about 95 million, and wallets 17 million.

Egypt’s imports of mobile phones declined by 50.7 percent to US$299.1 million during the first four months of this year, compared to $607 million in the comparable period of 2021.

Meanwhile, a member of the Egyptian Communications Division, Mohamed Hedaya, said the opening of mobile manufacturing factories in Egypt will provide jobs and hard currency and localize the technology industry in Egypt.

He added that factories specialized for mobile services such as chargers, headphones and other phone accessories are planned in the future, to eventually turn Egypt into a hub for mobile phone manufacturing.
