Fans and lovers of afrobeats music are in an ecstatic mood at the moment. This is because a reality show, ‘Naija Star Search’, solely focused on that genre of music has continued to make waves.

Speaking at an audition for the reality show, singer and rapper, Asha Gangali, noted that though afrobeats has evolved, more still needed to be done to sustain the momentum.

He told Merrymakers, “Everybody is shouting that afrobeats is getting Grammy recognitions, but if we don’t manage it from home or get a platform to continue projecting the right vibes to the global audience, it will fade off, just like Jamaica’s dancehall did.

“We (afrobeats) got there at the expense of dancehall reggae. Do you think the dancehall people are happy? We are dominating the airwaves. Afrobeats currently enjoys dominance but if it is not managed, we may lose the fame in the long run. That’s why we have to keep discovering new talents such as is been done in Naija Star Search.”

The reality show, which is powered by affordable pay-TV platform, StarTimes, and Kennis Music, is set to hit television screens in September. Winners will win N10m and other consolation prizes. Judges of the show include Keke Ogungbe, Asha Gangali and ID Cabasa; with VJ Adams as the host.

Asha also urged music lovers to see the ‘Naija Star Search’ as a leverage to take afrobeats to a greater height.
