Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi left for New York on Monday for the high-level UN General Assembly session but will not meet with US leaders during his five-day trip.
The Iranian government tweeted that the president’s visit to New York for the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly “is in line with the effort to materialize fair international order through economic multilateralism.”
“Presence in the UNGA is an opportunity for expressing the viewpoints of the Iran,” Raisi told reporters before departing for New York, according to the official Iranian News Agency (IRNA).
“This is a chance that should be grasped to voice out oppression maintained against the great Iranian nation.”
The ultra-conservative president said he would hold no meetings and talks US President Joe Biden during the trip.
“We have no plans to negotiate or meet with the Americans on the visit,” Raisi said.
Iran has been negotiating for 17 months with Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, and, indirectly, with the United States, the restoration of the 2015 nuclear agreement.
The pact limited the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions.
Then US President Donald Trump abandoned the agreement in 2018.
The Iranian president’s trip to New York has triggered controversy and protests in the US.
Earlier this month, a group of Republican senators asked Biden not to allow the Iranian president, sanctioned by the United States since 2019, to enter the country.
Some opponents of the Islamic republic have staged protests in New York, asking Raisi not to be allowed to enter.
Amnesty International has accused him of being part of the committee that supervised the executions of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.
