An UN-support project is set to turn organic waste from farms into renewable energy in Rwanda.
HomeBiogas – which supply biogas systems for treating organic waste – will spearhead the initiative after winning a recent UN tender.
The company develops and markets biogas systems for the on-site treatment of organic waste and its transformation into renewable energy for cooking or heating.
The systems will treat the organic waste of farmers in communities in eastern Rwanda and will include the installation and training of the locals in the use of the systems.
The systems – which the company sells in over 100 countries worldwide -:
- Come in a convenient package for storage and transportation;
- Are simple to install;
- Durable for fifteen years;
- Easy to use.
The firm says that one of the main sources of methane gas emissions is the disposal of organic waste in landfills.
It believes its solution has a “significant” environmental value due to its ability to reduce methane gas emissions.
HomeBiogas’ system treats organic waste on-site and thus “significantly” reduces methane gas emissions and results in the reduction of over six tons of carbon dioxide per year for each system.
In addition, the innovative technology provides a “thorough” solution for the on-site treatment of organic waste.
Therefore, it generates “significant” savings for its customers in the growing costs of removal, transportation, and landfilling of waste.
A spokesperson said: “By turning farm waste into clean cooking gas and organic fertiliser, these systems will advance people’s lives.”
“Farmers will become more resilient with their own-grown organic fertiliser, and families will enjoy their own sustainable energy source.”
“The innovative technology we have developed provides farmers with efficient and effective waste-to-resource solutions that improve crop outputs and revenue opportunities,” the spokesperson added.
Biofertiliser
With a regenerative approach to agriculture and farming, and as the prices of chemical fertilisers are on the rise, the HomeBiogas self-sustaining solution creates a multi-purpose biofertiliser.According to the firm, the multi-purpose biofertiliser:
- Supplements chemical fertilisers;
- Stimulates the soil;
- Strengthens the plant;
- Allows farmers to save on outputs.
HomeBiogas has already been implemented on thousands of farms worldwide that are now “enjoying tens of thousands of litters of organic fertiliser as well as a steady flow of cooking gas”.
