Was this tweet by a Namibian MP about Burna Boy experiencing load shedding in South Africa made in bad taste?
He came, he performed and he left. But tweeps are still arguing about Burna Boy’s concert in Mzansi, and throwing shade – pardon the pun – at the country plagued by load shedding.
On Saturday 24 September, the Nigerian hitmaker performed at the DStv Delicious Festival at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. A day later, the Grammy-winning star flew to Namibia to perform another concert.
But whilst Burna Boy chose to thank SA for their warm reception, a Namibia MP used the opportunity to mock the country’s energy crisis.
BURNA BOY CONCERT SPARKS TIFF ON LOAD SHEDDING
It all began when Namibian MP Inna Koviao Hengari posted a few snarky comments about SA having to endure load shedding and bragging how Burna Boy would not have to experience the same in her country.
Tagging Burna, she tweeted on Sunday: “Welcome to Namibia @burnaboy! Here, there’s no load-shedding HAVE massive electric FUN”.
The tweet saw tense back-and-forth between tweeps of the neighboring countries.
Inna laughed off the backlash, adding fuel to the fire with more jabs at SA.
But South African tweeps were unimpressed and International Relations & Co-operation spokesperson Clayson Monyela clapped back.
He tweeted: “Burna Boy comes from Nigeria. He’s familiar with load shedding. The energy challenges in SA are being addressed and will benefit Namibia. Your country’s economy is intrinsically linked to ours. The Namibian dollar is pegged to the rand. I’m certain you are familiar with SACU & its benefits. Behave!”.
He added: “If this was a joke, it’s in poor taste from an MP. Do better honourable member”.
Media exec Khaya Dlanga also reacted, adding: “Only 50% of your population has access to electricity. 91% in SA. SA has a population of 60 million and you have a population of 2.5 million”.
NAMIBIAN MP REFUSES TO APOLOGISE
But whilst Burna Boy has left South Africans feuding with a fellow African country in his wake (again), the Namibian MP who kicked off the online drama revealed she would not be apologising.
Responding to a report by SAFM about the Twitter tiff, Hengari posted: “Apologise for what?”.
She added: “I’m not deleting anything. Let that conversation [for both countries] serve as a reminder of why we all need to do better for our people! No love lost, we are still Africans with shared struggles”
